Inclusion

We support departments in their work in widening participation and enhancing the learning experience of students from all backgrounds. Research also shows relatively few students with physical or sensory disabilities participate in performing arts higher education. Many challenges are faced in providing the necessary support for those students who are currently being taught, particularly on courses where there is an emphasis on practical (technical and creative) skill development.

PALATINE events which have discussed inclusion include:

Visual Impairment & Performing Arts Courses (2002), Diversity and Difference in Group Work (2002), Dealing with Difference: widening participation issues in music (2004) and Moving Matters: supporting disabled dance students in HE (2007).

PALATINE Development Awards involving inclusion include:

Learning Difficulties in Practical Dance Study (2003), Music and Social Class: Implications of Widening Participation in Higher Education for Student Experience of Teaching and Learning in Music (2004), An Equal Reflection (2006), Moving Matters: Supporting Disabled Dance Students in HE – Developing a Best Practice Resource (2008), Bringing the Practical into Practice: Developing Practical Teaching Aids for Dyslexic Dance Students (2008).
