Enhancing Learning through Technology

Successfully integrating traditional forms of artistic expression with digital technology is an ongoing challenge in the performing and creative arts.

In all performing arts disciplines, there are potentially huge problems of copyright and performing rights, which must be addressed. There are also serious ideological issues to consider: in disciplines which are based on person-to-person interaction, just how appropriate is it to teach at a distance or through a virtual medium?

As part of the JISC/Higher Education Academy Distributed e-Learning programme, which focuses on the cultural issues and subject differences surrounding embedding e-learning technologies, PALATINE has been working on the PRISM project. PRISM is an interdisciplinary project to develop a learning website that allows its users to create re-usable learning objects that identify connections between the subject areas of art, architecture & design, dance, theatre production, music, film and literature in some of the influential Anglo-European art movements of the ‘modern’ period.

PALATINE subsequently obtained further funding to undertake a case study based on PRISM for the Accessible e-learning in Higher Education report published by JISC.

PALATINE is also working with the English Subject Centre on the new Second Life Project
