Event Description

From Practice as Research to Practising for Learning
For arts practitioners who have become involved in teaching, the continuance of an engagement with their professional creative practice - practising the practice - constitutes an important part of what might be considered their research and scholarly activity. The ways in which this might feed back into their subject teaching might be viewed as a parallel to the ‘Research informed Teaching’ studies that are taking place across the HE sector.
This conference seeks to explore the ways in which practitioners/teachers consciously use their creative practice to inform their students' learning so that their studies may be directly and measurably enhanced by the creative practices of their teachers.
The conference will be of interest to anyone who has come fresh from arts practice and entered the daunting world of higher education, through to those who are struggling to get time to practise their creative practice so that they can be refreshed and bring new and exciting ideas to their curricula.
The conference will reveal a number of case studies and explore the experiences and concerns of delegates through a range of workshops and seminars, reflecting on questions such as:
- How does a creative practitioner metamorphose in to a teacher?
- Where does the understanding of creative practice most impact on the student experience?
- Do some creative practices have an inbuilt pedagogic process that can be harnessed to engage the emerging practitioner in the student?
Guest Speakers
Alison ShreeveDirector of Creative Learning in Practice, Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning based at the London College of Fashion, will present the findings of her recent Ph.D. thesis which explores the role of the practitioner who also teaches, looking specifically at the variation in the experience they have of the relationship between practice and teaching.
Antonia WalkerEducational Researcher and Developer for Artswork, Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning in the creative industries, at Bath Spa University will present the progress of 10by10, an inquiry into the experience and role of teacher-practitioners exploring the links between creativity, facilitation, development and research.

Travelling by car to the King Alfred Campus
Visitors should approach Winchester along Romsey Road. If driving from the M3, come off at junction 11 and pass through Badger Farm Road and turn right at the second roundabout to proceed along Romsey Road.
